The core idea: predicted interest
Both Instagram and TikTok try to predict how likely each person is to enjoy a given post, then rank posts by that prediction. They build the prediction from what you have done before (what you watched, liked, saved, shared, skipped) and from how other people have reacted to that post. A follower count is only a small part of it.
Instagram feed, Reels and Explore
Instagram has explained that it ranks each surface differently. In the main feed it leans on your relationship with the poster and your past interactions. In Reels and Explore, which mostly show accounts you do not follow, it leans on how people react: watch time, likes, shares, saves and whether people visit the profile afterwards. Shares by direct message have become a particularly strong signal.
TikTok For You
TikTok shows each new video to a small test group, then widens the audience if those viewers watch to the end, rewatch, like, comment, share or follow. Watch time and completion are the big ones. TikTok has said that follower count and past viral videos are not direct ranking factors, which is why a brand-new account can get a big view count on its first video.
The part followers play
On Instagram, followers see your posts in their main feed, so genuine followers who engage help. Bought followers mostly do not engage, so they do not help reach and can dilute engagement rates. On TikTok, followers matter even less to reach. What a bought pack changes on both platforms is the profile: the impression a visitor gets when deciding whether to follow you. Our pack pages say this up front, for example on TikTok followers.
Beliefs to let go of
- “Hashtags make you go viral.” They help categorise a post; they do not override how people react to it.
- “Posting at the perfect minute matters.” Timing helps a little; content matters far more.
- “Shadowbans hit everyone who buys followers.” Reduced distribution is usually tied to content or behaviour that breaks guidelines, not to receiving follows.
- “Likes alone push a post.” They are one signal among many, and weaker than shares, saves and watch time.
Putting it to use
If you want reach, invest in content people watch to the end and send to friends. If you want your profile to look established when those new viewers arrive, a modest pack can help with that one job. Our growth guide has practical tips for the first part.
Asked by readers
Does buying followers help the algorithm?
Not meaningfully. Both platforms rank posts mainly on how viewers react to them.
Do likes help a post on the For You page?
A little, but watch time, rewatches and shares matter more.
Can buying followers get me shadowbanned?
Reduced reach is usually linked to content or behaviour that breaks guidelines rather than to receiving follows, but automation tools and shared passwords increase risk.
Why did my first TikTok get more views than later ones?
TikTok tests every video on its own merits, so view counts vary widely from video to video.
